RIM launches NFC-driven BlackBerry Music Gateway
01 May 2012
Stream music via NFC from our phone to your audio system
We're not sure of anything 'big' is going to come out of the BlackBerry World event. Yesterday we heard that no new phones were scheduled to launch, but what about other BlackBerry-related product? Well, the BlackBerry Music Gateway is one such launch.
It's about music, specifically harnessing the music on your phone. Rather than simply using Bluetooth to stream music, this new gadget can use NFC to stream music to an audio system from a distance of around 30ft. Your BlackBerry can then operate as a remote for that music via your audio kit.
It's an interesting concept, not least because it shows what NFC can do - it's not just about mobile payments. On the downside, you'll need a BlackBerry with NFC to use it, which is currently restricted to the Bold 9790 or Curve 9360 / 9380. That's unlikely to be the case as the months progress though.
If you want one, it's just gone on sale in the US for around $50. A UK price to follow.
