LG Optimus 3D Max heads to Europe

24 April 2012

But LG coy about a UK launch for 3D phone

Back in February, LG unveiled its second-gen 3D phone, the LG Optimus 3D Max. A European launch was mentioned back then and and has now been confirmed. But not for the UK.

The phone has just landed in Europe, with Germany the first place to see the smartphone. But what about the UK? Well, LG has told us that there are currently no plans for the 3D phone to come to the UK right now, although it hasn't been completely ruled out. Time will tell, but it doesn't look good.

Perhaps the uptake and reception of past 3D phones in the UK has made LG more than a little wary of launching a new phone here. We didn't exactly go overboard in praise of the original Optimus 3D when we reviewed it last year. Other manufacturers have struggled to make a mark too.

But the LG Optimus 3D Max did look to have potential. OK, it was launching with Android Gingerbread (with an update to Ice Cream Sandwich to follow), but the slimline handset did offer up a 4.3-inch autostereoscopic LCD touch screen for glasses-free 3D, a rear-mounted five-megapixel camera with dual lenses (for capturing that 3D), a VGA camera on the front, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of on-board storage and NFC connectivity. It also packed the first mobile phone camera to offer 3D image and video editing.

It might well get a belated launch in the UK. But right now, you'll be looking at a Euro jaunt or some nifty web browsing to secure the LG Optimus 3D Max. Instead, why not check out our preview of the upcoming Optimus L-Series phones - we've just reviewed the first one, the Optimus L3.
