Heat turned-up over iPad temperature concerns

21 March 2012

Independent testing finds Apple's new iPad operating at blistering temperatures

As we reported on Monday, users of the new iPad have been complaining of an overheating issue, something Apple quickly dismissed, stating the device operates 'well within our thermal specifications'.

Now tests carried out by Consumer Reports have recorded the latest iPad running at 116 degrees Fahrenheit, a scorching 21 degrees beyond Apple's own thermal operating range of 32 to 95 degrees. The company used a thermal imaging camera to record the temperature after playing Infinity Blade II for 45 minutes with the iPad on mains power. They reported that the heat 'wasn't evenly distributed throughout the iPad's back, but concentrated near one corner'.

As with the iPad 2 (which recorded a temperature of 104 degrees under the same conditions), the hottest area surrounds the iPad's beefed up battery.

We're currently testing the new iPad against some of the competition, keep an eye on our News and Review sections for the results.
