APP WATCH: Instagram launch for Android imminent

12 March 2012

Photo sharing app currently in 'private beta'

We heard work on an Android version was being undertaken last year, but with a small team and no definite launch date, it didn't seem to be going anywhere. Things have obviously moved on though, with Instagram for Android now being tested ahead of a launch.

Speaking to TechCrunch, company co-founder Kevin Systrom briefly showed off the new Android app, without giving too much away about its functionality. He added: 'In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app. It’s crazy.' Commenting on the delay between the iOS and Android version, he said: 'I don’t think it took us so long. We just had priorities. Had we tried to be both on Android and iPhone at the same time, it would’ve been tough to innovate in the way that we have.'

The final product is now in a private beta for final testing, just ahead of public consumption. Right now, it's not quite ready for a full media walkthrough, but that doesn't sound far off. If all goes to plan, it should be a matter of weeks before Android users can socially interact with their iOS conterparts' phone camera and the app-based filters.

It should also boost user figures for Instagram. Not that they need much boosting. Back in December, the company claimed it had 15 million users. Fast forward a few months and that figure is now 27 million. Add in Android? It'll be time to get the calculator out. We'll let you know as soon as the app is available for download.
